What is Prebiotics?
According to the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) the global authority on these topics — the official definition of a prebiotic is:
“A substrate that is selectively utilized by host microorganisms, conferring a health benefit.” Prebiotics are dietary substances that human digestive enzymes can’t break down, which can then become a source of food for the beneficial microbes in the intestine.
At Backpack, we believe yogurt should do more than taste great — it should nourish your gut and support overall wellness. That’s why our yogurt products are carefully crafted with natural prebiotic ingredients, bioactive compounds, and specialized cultures.
1. Galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS)
GOS are naturally present in milk and yogurt. These undigestible carbohydrates act as prebiotics by feeding beneficial bacteria like Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli in the gut, especially in the intestine and colon.
2. Glycomacropeptide (GMP)
GMP is a bioactive milk peptide — a fragment of the casein protein — found in yogurt. It helps promote the growth of good gut bacteria and supports digestive health and anti-inflammatory activity in the colon.
We Add EPS-Producing Cultures for Gut Health and Creaminess
To make Backpack Yogurt both healthier and creamier, we include specific fermentation cultures (including: culture names: Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. Bulgaricus, Lactobacillus rhamnosus (e.g. GG), Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus plantarum, Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis (e.g. BB-12), Lactococcus lactis) that naturally produce Extracellular Polysaccharides (EPS).
What Are EPS?
EPS are complex carbohydrates secreted by probiotic bacteria during fermentation. They function like dietary fiber, feeding beneficial microbes and enhancing gut protection.
Examples of EPS Include:
β-glucans
Dextran
Fructans
Glucans with rhamnose, galactose, or glucose
Benefits of EPS in Yogurt:
Stimulate the growth of Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli
Support gut barrier integrity
Aid immune modulation
Improve yogurt texture and natural creaminess
We Boost Prebiotics Naturally with Fruits and Plant-Based Ingredients
In addition to milk-derived and microbial sources, we further enhance our yogurt’s prebiotic value by adding:
Fruits like Blueberries & Strawberries – Naturally rich in polyphenols and fibers that work synergistically with probiotics to improve gut flora and reduce inflammation.
Plant-based Gums – Such as guar gum, acacia gum, or pectin, which act as soluble fibers. These feed beneficial gut bacteria and improve the consistency of the yogurt.
Why Choose Backpack Yogurt?
Our yogurts combine the best of dairy science, fruit nutrition, and fermentation technology to support a healthy microbiome. Each spoonful is packed with live cultures, natural prebiotics, and nourishing ingredients your gut will love.
